Fat Loss Is Earned

Fat loss is earned.

When you read that you probably think, well of course it is you don’t just magically lose body fat (note that I don’t refer to fat loss as weight loss)

That’s obvious, that’s also not what I’m talking about here.

If I had a dollar for every time someone came to me saying they have hit a plateau or tried everything regarding fat loss and nothing works, well let’s just say there would be a lot of dollars kicking around for my morning coffee run.

The fact of the matter is, you aren’t ready to lose fat. Your body is in the position that it does not want to allow you to lose fat simply due to survival. The body is efficient as hell at keeping us alive and part of that involves the adaptability of our metabolism.

The metabolism is managed by the thyroid, which when you chronically / inefficiently “diet” causes a downregulation in thyroid hormones. The downregulation is part of that survival mechanism
And your body’s desire to adapt in order to survive.

Continuing down the path of fat loss while in this state will do nothing except prolong the length of time needed before you are ready for said fat loss. When thyroid hormone balance takes a hit and metabolism
Is down-regulated, so are sex hormones. The body realizes it is in survival mode and survival mode is not an environment conducive to reproduction.

A more in-depth look here looks like this. An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) creates an increase in TRH (thyroid releasing hormone) which causes the release of TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) as well as prolactin. Elevated Prolactin with low thyroid hormones then inhibits the body from forming and secreting the hormones (gonadotropins) which act on the testes and ovaries (gonads) to create our sex hormones. Low sex hormones = inefficient fat loss, muscle building, and so forth.

There are more factors at play here but these two (thyroid and sex hormones) are absolutely crucial to the fat loss process.

I’ve mentioned this before but as a coach, you have to learn to have the hard conversations. You have to respect your knowledge enough to know that there will be pushed back

our athletes will fight you on things, especially when the horse blinders are on and fat loss is the finish line.

This is something early on I may have ignored by thinking I could just take anyone and everyone directly into fat loss phases. As I continued to grow and understand Physiology and endocrinology (which I’m still a student of and forever will be) I realized that by just doing what the athlete in front of you wants, you’re actually doing them a disservice. Fast forward to who I am today as a coach and quite simply
If you won’t respect that you aren’t ready for fat loss, and aren’t willing to spend the time doing it right, you aren’t the athlete for me. We don’t do shortcuts.

I might tell you it may take 6 months to get to where you want to be, and that’s hard to hear for some, but at the same time, i’ll tell you that if you do it this way, when we get you there, which we will – that future version of you, they’ll be happier and healthier than the one who rushed the process and still fell short.

If you are the person who works 8-12 hours a day, is constantly stressed, doing hours of activity (exercise + cardio), eating 1000 kcal daily, or no carbs, etc., and drinking 4 energy drinks and 2 coffee’s just to keep awake. Take a second and listen to this.

You aren’t broken. You aren’t the person who CANT lose weight. You aren’t the anomaly.

You just aren’t ready for fatless, and the sooner you get ready, the sooner it will come.
